Janet Vargas

Law Student and Survivor of Domestic Violence

January 21, 2019

My desire to become a lawyer is based on bringing meaning, purpose and honor to the life of my young child who was murdered by my ex-husband while we were divorcing due to domestic violence.

Following my child's death, while raising two other young children, I pursued my college education and graduated magna cum laude.  I later became a health care professional and held leadership positions in my community. One of my positions was elected School Board Member in my town. Eventually I became the  School Board President.  While accomplishing all of these goals, I faced tremendous challenges and immense grief.

Though my abuser confessed to the murder, he was not prosecuted due to a legal technicality. Further, though I won a $10 million court judgment, I could not recover any money. The legal system seemed cold and unjust to me. I was not deterred, however. Instead I was motivated to apply to law school.

I am currently enrolled in law school. My goal is to carry on the memory of my dear child while helping other survivors. I plan to serve as a criminal homicide, domestic violence and child abuse prosecutor as my future career. I will give voice and bring justice to victims of abuse. I am thankful to SOAR for Justice for providing  me a platform to share my story and help others.

Note: My real name and some personal details have been changed due to safety concerns.
