Scholarship

In furtherance of the goal of supporting survivors of abuse with the costs of obtaining a legal education and increasing the number of future lawyers committed to careers in domestic violence advocacy and law reform, the inaugural SOAR for Justice Scholarship awards $500 - $1000 to qualified California law students with proven track records in social justice.  Additionally, SOAR is proud to confer a $1000 - $1500 Bar Exam Award to help defray the costs of taking the California bar exam for eligible survivors of economic abuse who experience financial hardship.

The 2017 scholarship cycle is now closed and we are no longer accepting applications.

Please check back in the summer of 2018 for an update about the next scholarship cycle.

Valentina is a mother and courageous survivor of domestic violence and financial abuse who is unwilling to give up on her dream to become a licensed attorney. Dependent on public assistance to support her children and unable to afford to pay the fees associated with taking the California bar exam, she has a new lease in life thanks to SOAR for Justice's Bar Exam Award. 2017 Law Student Awards

Twelve exceptional students representing seven different law schools in California have been awarded SOAR for Justice Scholarships in the amount of $500. The scholarship recognizes law students who are survivors of domestic abuse, child sexual abuse, campus sexual violence and/or committed to pursuing public interest legal careers representing victims and their children. "Individually, each scholarship recipient is making her voice heard and breaking down stereotypes," says Dovie Yoana King, SOAR for Justice's director and a survivor of domestic violence. "Together, they are affirming women’s dignity and agency over their lives and bodies." Congratulations to the inaugural class of 2017 law student recipients!
