Meet Dovie Yoana King

SOAR for Justice's Founder & Director

SOAR for Justice is dedicated to helping survivors of abuse rise for justice. Its founder and director, Dovie Yoana King, is a devoted public interest lawyer and California native who kept a dark secret- she was in an abusive marriage and endured emotional, physical, verbal, sexual, psychological and financial abuse. While this chapter in her life was truly devastating, she gradually overcame fear and isolation by reaching out for help at the San Diego Family Justice Center, an organization that provides free services for abused women and their children. In doing so, Dovie gained support to escape the abuse, obtain a restraining order and navigate a high conflict case in family court. While Dovie successfully obtained sole legal and physical custody of her child, she understands that many other abused women do not fare so well and reform is needed to improve the legal system. Currently, Dovie resides in Boston with her child. She is a member of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, San Diego Domestic Violence Council, Women's Bar Association in Boston, San Diego County Bar Association and Lawyers Club of San Diego. She is dedicated to advancing the rights of survivors and promoting family court justice.

An important part of Dovie's healing and recovery was her decision to provide pro bono legal services to low-income women and immigrants at a domestic violence restraining order clinic at the South Bay Courthouse in Chula Vista, California. She drew from her personal life and family court experience to better serve the needs of survivors seeking legal help. In June 2017, Dovie was presented with the Outstanding Service Award by the Legal Aid Society of San Diego for her volunteer work at the clinic. She also received the prestigious Wiley W. Manuel Certificate for Pro Bono Legal Services by the State Bar of California for two consecutive years in 2016 and 2017. Dovie's personal story of strength and perseverance is featured in various publications. She speaks out about her harrowing experience in Survivors Speak and Careers.

Dovie has made it her mission to educate the community about the need for family court justice. She is committed to mentoring other women who have left abusive relationships and also publishes articles about the dangers of domestic violence on college campuses and in the workplace. By establishing SOAR for Justice, Dovie endeavors to work with lawyers, community-based organizations, legislators and law enforcement  to give domestic violence survivors and their children a stronger voice for change.
